Inflation Reduction Act and its Impact on Environmental Advocates

President Biden has signed the Inflation Reduction Act (IRA), a bill which can have a significant impact on nonprofit organizations that are dedicated to helping the environment. More specifically, there are provisions for two separate programs: Forestry Conservation and Coastal Communities.

  • Forestry Conservation – Through the Urban and Community Forestry Assistance program, the IRA has provisioned $1.5 billion through 9/30/31 for tree planting and related activities. While details will be forthcoming, the funds provisioned can be interpreted for use of tree planting and related activities in an urban settings and nonprofits who emphasize in this can benefit.
  • Coastal Communities – Through the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration program, the IRA has provisioned $2.6 billion through 9/30/26 for:
    • Conservation, restoration, and protection of coastal and marine habitats
    • Enabling coastal communities to prepare for extreme storms and other changing climates
    • Pacific salmon and other fisheries
    • Marine fishery and marine mammal stock assessments
    • Projects that support natural resources that sustain coastal and marine resource dependent communities

The coastal communities provision casts a wide net of different types of nonprofits that can help. Nonprofits that are dedicated to protecting the environment at large or specific communities can benefit alongside nonprofits that are dedicated to protecting species of fish and oceanic wildlife. Climate change is occurring on a global scale, and nonprofits may help communities brace for further climate change. Finally, there are a lot of communities driven by different marine resources (food, energy and mineral resources) and nonprofits focusing on conserving resources may be able to help.
