Mid West Crop Tour – Monday’s Recap

This is my fifth year of the Mid West Crop Tour and I must admit this is the longest day so far. We left Dublin, Ohio this morning around 7 am and headed north to Bowling Green, Ohio and then turned west on the north side of Fort Wayne, Indiana and then turned south toward Fishers, Indiana and finally finished around 7 pm tonight.

We took 9 counts in Ohio and 5 counts in Indiana. Ohio key point was “Variability” in both corn and soybean yields. Our low for Ohio was 120 in Hancock County and a high of 243 in Henry County. Almost our whole route was very dry and needs water soon to fill the crop. Our overall average for Ohio was 171. bpa

Soybeans were all over the place. We had a low of 320 pods per three foot square and a high of 2,650. Like the corn, the beans need water and we saw a fair amount of Japanese Beetles in some areas and other areas were fairly pest free. Our net average for Ohio was about 1,173 pods per three foot square.

Indiana corn was just as inconsistent with a low of 123 and a high of 208. Our average for the five counts was 168. Soybeans were extremely consistent with a low count of 1,320 and a high of 1,382 and an overall average of 1,359.
I am looking forward to seeing how the crops look tomorrow; since to hit the numbers the USDA and the trade is talking about; we will need to see much better numbers tomorrow.
