Day 12 of my Business Trip

I am sitting at the Detroit airport ready to head onto Portland, Oregon for the Northwest Coops annual meeting tomorrow and Wednesday. That is done at noon on Wednesday and then finally home after 14 days on the road.

The early part of the trip was in the St. Joseph, Missouri area and off to Minneapolis for the ABA Ag Bankers conference. I was not able to attend all of the conference but it is apparent that bankers have more concerns this year than last regarding the Ag sector. No panic, but definitely more concern.

I then spent the next few days traveling through Iowa putting on tax seminars for CALT. At least the low reading of 4 was recorded on the first day and by Saturday it had warmed up to the mid 60s.

Saturday night I stayed in Naperville, IL which appears to be a very nice Chicago suburb. I had dinner with farmer friends of mine and this year’s yields made up for the drop in price. Next year will be interesting to see where the spring price ends up. Even though they have productive soils they are continuing to add irrigation to ensure production. Crop insurance is not the only method of risk management.

Finally I spent the last couple of days in Southwestern Michigan getting a tour of lots of blueberry fields and some very yummy blueberry related foods. We then got hit with storm coming west over Lake Michigan and it is always interesting to look at horizontal rain.

If any of our readers are in Portland the next two days stop me and say hi.
