Secure the Zone When You’re at Home

Often, we only think of good cybersecurity practices in the workplace, and when we get home it’s not as important to us. Good cyber safety practices should start at home. With the ever-increasing number of connected devices, we must be vigilant in ensuring we protect ourselves and children and truly have comfort at home. Below are a few tips to keep yourself protected:

  • Ensure listening devices are only listening when you want them to. How many tv commercials have triggered a response for one of your home assistant devices?
    • Alexa
    • Google Home
    • Siri
  • Remove default passwords and establish strong passwords for all network devices.
  • Ensure you have a password for your wireless network(s) and use WPA2 instead of WEP.
    • Protect yourself from wardriving (people driving around searching for unsecured wireless networks).
    • Wigle.net is a website dedicated to logging different wireless networks.
      • You can search by address.
  • Segment your home devices on separate networks where applicable.
    • Smart TVs and other streaming devices on one network.
    • IoT devices on one network.
      • Security cameras
      • Smart lights
      • Home assistants
    • Home Office on one network.
    • Guest network for visitors
